Our homepage has found a new home (24 September 2004). Still it is under permanent construction. So please come back frequently! Here is what you find (marked with links) or eventually will find:

• A prehistory of the project (by Henry Immerwahr)

• A list of publications and papers emanating from the project
• A page entitled Alphabets used on Attic vases, which tells you (1) about Unicode Greek on your computer and (2) gives you the basics about the Attic and Ionic alphabets and the phonology of the Attic dialect.
• The AVI DATABASE, the main part of the project. Some documents will help using it:
• A sample of how an entry will be structured.
• The bibliography (a huge text document, c. 500 kb, searchable with your 'find' function).
• A list of collections (visited or not).
• A page on copyright (the pictures that you find on these html-pages are my own and are, even if bigger than 'thumbnails', free from copyright restrictions; but when you use them, please cite AVI as their source and insert a link to this page!).

The software for the database and its presentation on the web is on its way, but uploading cannot start before two more things have been done. First we have to finish preparing the data. Henry Immerwahr's Corpus of Attic Vase Inscriptions (CAVI) has to be transformed into a format fit for reading into the database. His huge bibliography, which we have extracted from CAVI, has to be brought into a more uniform format. These two jobs are one their way. In the meantime, you can download Immerwahr's CAVI as a pdf (7.7 MB, January 2008, new version 6.8 MB, January 2009, here mirrored from the original website). The pdf version is not identical to the one that goes into our database since Immerwahr has in the meantime continued his work on it. So you may use both versions.

CAVI is 'only' the basis of AVI, however. Up to now we have revised around 500 of the 8500 vases and fragments and added 200 new ones. This will go on at a steady speed, we hope. (AVI is not my only activity, though.) Moreover, of all vases we have seen we have taken digital pictures (around 3500). Some of them you will find as an ornament on these pages (we may eventually make them into a quiz...). But then all the revised data have to be substituted for the old ones in the database and the new entries added; and the pictures need uploading and linking with the entries. All this means a lot of work in the library and at the computer, but as soon as we think some part is ready for uploading, we will do it! So as I said, please come back frequently!
