Epigraphical Abbreviations

In H.R.I.'s CAVI the following standards are used. Not all of them are conform to the Leiden system (S. Dow, Conventions in Editing: A Suggested Reformulation of the Leiden System, GRBS Scholarly Aids, 2; Durham), and AVI will eventually adjust them:

<...> omitted letters
(...) miswritten letters
{...} letters inserted by mistake
[...] letters lost
^ gap between letters, whether caused by intervening objects or not; the former is usually noted.
v. vac. vacat whole letter spaces left blank
: two-dot punctuation
:* three-dot punctuation [[In his PDFs, H.R.I. now uses three dots from SymbolAthenian.]]
| line break
dotted letters letters uncertain when taken out of context [[The dots do not show properly below the letter, but in an extra space to its right; we are working on it.]]
accents and breathings usually omitted for name labels and repetitive vase inscriptions such as kalos-names and signatures. Sentences on vases and all words from sources other than vases are usually accented [[more often in H.R.I.'s recent PDFs than in the version here used for AVI]].
long marks added sporadically to name labels, especially for the ending -ōn.
Ligatures [[In his recent PDFs, H.R.I. has introduced the Unicode ligature mark below the line (035C), a͜b. In AVI, ligatures are explicitely stated, e.g. "Με lig.".]]
Syllabic heta (H = he in the Attic alphabet) [[In his recent PDFs, H.R.I. has the Unicode ligature mark above the line (0361), e.g. h͡ε. In AVI, these cases are explicitely stated by "h(ε)", e.g. "h(ε)βε".]]
